Just
like to tell you that Michael Karoli's favorite radio station was
Radio Caroline, especially when we started with Can.
Every night when we returned from the studio (to go) home he used to
stay in his car listening to your station. When I met him once in
the city I felt a bit sorry for him still sitting in his car. Then
he answered that he wanted to listen to a bit of Caroline music. I
shouldn't worry at all as he felt very comfortable in his parking
position behind the wheel. Later when he turned over to a new car I
bought his old one also sitting in there for a while finding out
what could have been the secret after all. Holger Czukay -
Bassist, Can.
(Can guitarist Michael
Karoli died 17/11/01 at the age of 53 after a long battle with
cancer.)
Dear Tom, thank you for all the wonderful programmes over the
years. Please come back on a regular basis. We love the music you choose. Thanks again
yours Gareth Tassell, my wife Rashma, Naomi and Scott. UK
Hi Mark Dezzani, Congratulations.
Caroline South with tonight's special on Dr.John the night-tripper, with tracks of his new
album and an interview. Terrific fusion of styles in his music. I would suggest a repeat
in the near future for those who are not able to listen right now. All the best, JC Hans,
Netherlands
It's too good to be true;
Planet Funk, Daft Punk and Tom Tom Club. I love the TTC, and Close To The Bone was almost
overlooked at the time. Brilliant stuff! God knows what you're playing now but it sounds
wonderful. Ah, the Sabres of Paradise. C& K Canada
Radio Caroline has long been a love
of mine - I remember I was gutted when Mi Amigo sank in 1980....I managed to visit Ross
Revenge when she was berthed in London in 1995 - I had a fascinating couple of hours
wandering round. Now Im quite a regular listener thanks to the wonders of digital
satellite, and often have a quiet couple of hours tuned in during an evening. And perfect
stereo reception as well - not a fade or a crackle to be heard. Any chance of something by
Asia or Heart? Regards from a very soggy Scottish Borders we have had 2 inches of rain the
last 24 hours and its a bit damp underfoot round here! Ross Lockley, Galashiels
Hi Mark, An excellent
"Global Trip". You started it with my favourite Genesis track "The Firth of
Fith". The album from which this came, "Selling England by the Pound", will
always be special to me. Hearing this was the turning point in my life from liking music
such as Gary Glitter, to rock album music. Most of the tracks from the new Gabriel album
sounded good and even the one I did not like the video of, sounded better on a second
hearing. I still think the video is a bit weird and so did my teenage daughters. Thanks
for an enjoyable evenings entertainment. I was ironing at the time, including 4 of my
Caroline T-Shirts, and it even made that less of a chore. LA, Steve. UK
Enjoy your programmes on Saturday
and Sunday nights. I listen in England using Astra and now World space! If your playing
the records in Seborga Italy how do you get the signal to the Astra satellite? P. Homer
.UK (Editors note: The programmes are recorded as MP3 files and sent on CD to
the Maidstone Studio via courier for transmission.)
Hi Mark,I live in Slagelse
on Zealand, with a population on 26.000. Caroline can be heard via the cable-TV system
here in my town. I know that a lot of people are enjoying your station here, since its
different from many others. Very best regards. Bjoern, Denmark
I used to listen in to Tom's
programmes on the high seas. On one autumn evening I could get Overdrive and the 319m
signal on the Scottish borders (1984 or 85) when I was travelling north. Andy
I'm listening via Astra
satellite and, at work, via internet. I'm glad I have re-discovered Caroline. I have
always been a great fan of the station up until the very last hours. And it is good that
the original format remained! Caroline has been on the whole of Sunday and it never gets
boring, unlike other stations that play the same songs over and over again. Wim
Koekebacker, Hekelingen (near Rotterdam), Netherlands.
Hello CarolineSouth, I am listening
on cable and sat to your program which is favorite by me ! Keep going on ! Caroline
forever. Greeting, Rolf from The
Netherlands
Hello, At last i found you
on cable, and heard you asking for reply from the Netherlands. Well, I listen. I'm a sound
engineer at "Radio Noord" for radio and TV for a daily job. Furthermore i make
eighties sounding Italo Disco under the name Lone Starr. Keep up the station and good
work, it's GREAT! Karel Post, Grouw Friesland.
With Greetings from Wuppertal, the
City with the Overhead railway. The Mark Stafford Programs are the best, first I can
understand him and its for my age;-) Joachim, Germany.
Hi Mark, Ive been a
Caroline supporter for about 30 years now-since 1970 RNI election broadcast. Nothing ever
equals Caroline for music diversity. I love your programme and Overdrive. Keep up the
great music programme. Russell, UK
Enjoyed listening to your party.
Duncan Larkin's a bit good isnt he? All the best. Paul
Hi everybody, I'm listening
to Overdrive for the first time on the net here in sunny Wigan England. I've been a
Caroline fan since Caroline North days in 1964 and love the show. Thanks and best wishes,
Andy, UK
Hi, good to hear Caroline back on
the air. I have been listening again since about January when we had our dish twitched
around from Hotbird to the Astra. Good Luck Nigel Huxter
Hi Mark, Just a line to say
I listen to The Legend at every available opportunity via the net and as I write this
message you have just played a tremendous record by the late, great Ian Drury,
Spasticus,Autisticus, a true Drury classic and great to hear it again. Ive been with you
guys since 1964,I aint gonna jump ship now, Keep up the fight. Finally, is there any
chance of you playing American Woman by the Canadian band Guess Who on your programme,
thanks L A. Bob.
Just a brief note to say how much I
enjoyed your ramble through your misspent youth as a short wave pirate. I used to listen
to the short wave pirates of those days as well as the London medium wave and FM pirates.
Particular favourites of the time were Thameside Radio on FM and Radio Krypton on short
wave. Sundays on Caroline have a "retired land-based pirate" feel to them. Pat
Edison was on Radio Kaleidoscope, Dave Owen on Radio Jackie as well as his offshore work,
Mark Stafford with his station and yourself. All the best. Mark Hawkins
Glad to have found you
again, back in the sixties I was an avid listener. Peter
Well, it's that time of year again.
Congratulations Radio Caroline - a Very Happy 38th Birthday - and MANY Happy Returns. I've
been ' with ' Caroline for 36 of those 38 years, and I'd just like to say : HELP ! Where
have all those decades gone ?!
Seriously though ( folks) who would have imagined say, 10 - or even 5 - years ago, that on
the 38th anniversary of Caroline arriving on the air, the station would STILL be on-air on
digital satellite across Europe and around the World on the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7
days a week? Thirty Eight years ago today those two media, which we now take all too
readily for granted, would have seemed like science fiction. Indeed, WERE science fiction.
And if the DJs of 1964 were told that 38 years on their successors would be playing music
using laser beams and computers, they would maybe have taken the 45 off the turntable and
given it a quick clean with an anti-static cloth, before changing the stylus and turning
those famous rotary pots to max. So - here we all are, 38 years on , and I think everyone
who has been involved in keeping Caroline going ( yes - Keeping The Dream Alive )can
gently congratulate themselves .Many said it couldn't happen, and yet here it is -
Happening. Caroline Continues - Long Live The Lady. Happy Birthday ! From Rob Foot in
Gosport, UK
Hallo Tom! listening to your
program tonight via the internet, just heard you play a track with the lyrics "I'm
not a number, I'm a free man". Unfortunately was out of the room when you back
announced it, I think I recall hearing you (or someone else?!) play it back in the Mi
Amigo days... (yes I remember you from then). I only rediscovered Caroline recently via
the net, didnt know anything about the Ross and the story so far....Just to say I liked
the female DJ that was on earlier today, afraid I didnt catch her name... can we have more
female presenters on Caroline, just to balance things out a bit?! Keep up the good work,
we are listening out here! ;-) Kevin in Frankfurt, Germany
(Editors note: I am not a number, I am a free man' is a sound-clip from
The cult 1960s TV series The Prisoner. Tom often plays this clip over music intros on his
Overdrive programme, along with soundbites from The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy
and other cult programmes.)
I had the pleasure of listening to
your station broadcasting on 576 kHz AM in the 520,8 meter band on the 23th of February
2002 at 22.07-22.30 UTC from Ulbroka, Latvia site according to the Hard-Core-DX web page.
I wondered who was playing good older blues and rock music on this frequency with a good
signal. Then I suddenly hear Radio Caroline identifications and I knew it was your station
on the air after a long time. Mr. Vesa Heikkila, Oulainen, Finland
Hi I am really keen
on your show and enjoyed very much the Ode To My Car song u played a few weeks ago. Kool
man kool From Michael age 15
Ode To My Car. I heard the above
song on your show on Sunday night and I thought it was hilarious. Could you tell me where
I can buy it please? Judy Murrell age 22. (Editors note: It is by comedy
actor Adam Sandler.)
Love the programmes as ever.
Please keep it up. Especially the Global Trip. Looking forward to this weeks 'Geronimo'
period. Regards and LA. Graham, Birchington, Kent
Hi Tom, I have heard your show
tonight (2-2-2002). It's was great. Special Neil Young...Thanks... Lukas Hekker, Dutch
Caroline-fan.
I enjoyed your guest
presenter on Sunday - Wolf-Deiter. Very informative, and certainly a "different"
selection of music. Thanks for the very rare chance to hear some of The Prisoner music
andsound-track. After all these years I still dont understand any of it ! Radio as
it should be. Thanks to all.Keep up the good work - it is appreciated. Buenas Noches,
Ormonde
Mark, Superb Prisoner tribute
tonight. Well done to yourself and Chris Martin for the idea. Paul
Thanks for playing the
Justin Hayward track tonight. We were both listening We enjoyed the show. Thanks for
putting in all the hard work. Roland and Viviane, UK
Dear DJs,
Can you please help me to find the
Deep Purple song APRIL. I was trying for sometime without success on the Internet. Here
where I live in Eastern Serbia I couldn't find it. Some people remember it, but no one has
the song. By the way, you are the best music radio station on the planet. Best regards, Miroslav, Serbia
I was there on Easter Monday
1964 when Simon Dee opened Caroline [THE LEGEND], am I an old bastard or what? From then
on I have been hooked on offshore radio. For me RADIO 270 WAS THE NUMBER 1 STATION, and my
favourite DJ was Vince Rusty Allen, and since Aug 14 1967 has never been heard of since,
so if anyone knows of his wherabouts, I know he is still in England, so any information is
gratefully received. L A, Bob.
Thanks a lot
for playing the Electric Prunes. Been ages since I heard them on the radio, and I wouldn't
be surprised if Caroline DJs are the only ones in the world who remember them... Thanks
again (also for all the other fantastic music)! Frank(ee) van Gerwen,
Netherlands.......
It is great to send
you e-mail. As a student in former Czechoslovak socialistic republik, I was receiving your
programs on AM during the nights. You may imagine what it was for many young people here
to listen something else than those stupid communistic songs...we were fed with... Of
course at that time we even did not dream that sometimes it will be Internet... At present
I am receiving you via Astra. Jan Kolc, Czechoslovakia

GLOBAL TRIP |
Caroline South's special
Global Trip on the protests at the Genoa G8 summit broadcast Sunday 29th July 2001,
generated the most enthusiastic audience response since our 2 hour Justin Hayward special
last February.
Sunday 29th July 00.00 - 01.00 CET (22.00 - 23.00
GMT/UTC). " Last weekend in Genoa 200,000 predominantly peaceful protestors
against the <economic fundamentalist policies>* of the G8 nations were caught up in
battles between a minority group of violent anarchists and the Italian police force and
Carabinieris, who shot dead one protestor and have been accused of undisciplined attacks
against the peaceful protestors. Caroline South reporter Cisco joined Saturdays march and
gives an eyewitness account of what really happened, with a soundtrack of protest
songs."
* Quote from Mikhail Gorbachev
I listen to your programme last night you make the radio that I like
because you give us music as a pure emotion. I just say about the G8 summit we shall
overcome some day. I wish you good luck for the future. Bernard Geurmonprez qui vous
écoute, via Astra 1G, de Limogne en Quercy, France
Hi all, I'd just like to congratulate you on last night's
programme covering the events in Genoa last week. I thought the last hour was one of the
most thought-provoking pieces of radio I've heard in years. The choice of music was
excellent, and the live recordings gave a real insight into what it must have been like
for the demonstrators. Personally, I have serious concerns about the violent action taken
by a minority of the "activists", and I don't necessarily agree with everything
the demonstrators say. But this programme, more than any other coverage of Genoa I've seen
/ heard on TV or radio, told the other side of the story in a very vivid way.
Congratulations to all involved on a fine piece of broadcasting. I seriously think you
should nominate it for a Sony award. All the best to everyone. Terry
Spittle
Mark, What exciting music and thought provoking dialogue in
tonights final hour excellent! Im not often moved to spontaneously put
pen to paper but this is great. As I type Im just hearing Anarchy
in the UK. Firestarter is an incredible track it sounds better every
time I hear it. Phew! And now, Gil Scott Heron from show gun to ray gun indeed. Chris
Bent, Bournemouth, UK.

Great show - still listening. Phil - Pontefract,
England.
Dear friends, I listen radio
Caroline since their start in 1964 (so old am I..). I then lived in The Hague so I could
receive all the off shore stations. Now I listen to Caroline via the Internet. It's great
that you broadcast in the southern part of France. I wish you all a lot of success over
there and don't forget us! Best regards, Dutch supporter, Koos de Ruijter
Hi Mark, I enjoy listening to the Caroline South programmes each
weekend, via Radio Caroline on the Astra 1G satellite. I was just wondering, does The
Breeze 88.4 FM has a web site? Many thanks Andrew Smith, Eastleigh, Hampshire, UK

Hi Tom, Been a great fan of Caroline since the late 70's
and great to see her back on the air via the Internet and with the great Caroline
Overdrive from France. I am originally from Kingston upon Thames but now listening in
Hythe, Kent, greatly starved of decent radio !!!. Keep up the great work. LA Warren
Stevenson.
Hi, Excellent program tonight. I am listening, here in
Chatham, on the web. If you get the chance next weekend can you please play that old
Caroline favourite For No One from the Barclay James Harvest album Every One Is Everybody
Else. All the best, Michael Jones
Hi Tom, it is nice to hear you on the radio again after so long.
Dave Jones, Liverpool
Hello Caroline, Keep L.A alive, then well keep
listening. Your programmes are absolutely a gift of God. Special thanks to Tom Anderson
for his superb shows. Best regards Piet Hagemeijer. The Netherlands
Keep up the good work. Carl Goodwin
Hi Radio Friends, Great site! Congrats on that...Caroline

Excellent program again tonite Tom. Now getting long in the tooth
I have listened to Caroline since the first days in the 60's but must say that your
program has always been my favourite and was sorely missed for many a year but it's great
to have it back blasting out the best music around. All the best, Michael Jones
Mark, Just a quick line. I don't often get to
hear your Sunday programme in full due to work commitments etc but last Sunday I did. Have
to say I enjoyed it immensely, excellent show. By the way, I love the on the half- hour
ID. Whose is the voice? It's the pronunciation of Hawaii that makes me smile. Best Wishes Martin
Denman (Glasgow)
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath on Caroline... So cool! Lets
rock! Jim
What incredible results persistence can have!! Caroline,
originally hit amidships by the British government, is still there and looking to a
tremendous future!! Well done to all on all the hard work!! I used to set my alarm in the
sixties, to 5.55a.m. so that I would be awake to hear the Caroline Bell and theme song.
That started my day and it was off to work. It is amazing that after all you guys have
been through, and me now residing in the USA, I can still wake up and listen to Caroline!!
Reece Porter, Orlando
Hi Mark D(J), I am listening on the Internet and the Astra satellite.
Great music and show. The show must go on. Rens De Groot, The Netherlands.
Hi Mark, you did a great show this evening! Amazing to hear
Nina Hagen on Caroline - wonder, if you would still have played her if the German parts
were in English too? But especially the "dangerous" hour after midnight (like
Mark Staffords Vinyl vault - keep cats, women and children in a safe place ;-) was great -
with the folk stuff at the end. Recorded most of it. Wolgang, Bavaria, Germany
Mark, tonight's programme - up there with many the GREAT programmes I
have heard from eg Tony, Tom, Johnnie, Fergie, Chris, Caroline M, Robb, and the other
greats. You have made it Well done - stay with us. John, UK
Re: Tom Anderson's Overdrive. Great show tonight. Nigel in Los
Angeles, USA
Re: Tom Anderson's Overdrive. Absolutely superb. This is the
first time I've heard Caroline "live" since before the mast came down in 1987.
My wife said I looked just like a little boy !! Loved Bob Lawrence's show also. What's all the debate about format. This sounds wonderful to
me......"The Legend lives on..." LA, Ross, Scotland
Man, am I happy to hear Radio Caroline on the air again !!! Born in
1953 I first listened to Caroline South on 259 in 1965 until that shutdown in 1968- with a
Philips Philetta and 40 metres of wire ! In wintertime I could even listen to Caroline
North off the Isle of Man in the afternoon! Caroline, Big L, and almost a dozen others
offshore were my favourites! Then went through all the years with different coming and
going of Caroline and other pirate radio offshore stations. Now I am 48 and Caroline is
back- better than ever! Listening is somewhat more comfortable, and sound quality is the
best I've ever heard from Caroline in Germany. Music selection is nice. Keep your own
style...quality counts! Best regards and wishes from Germany. Fritz Wuelfing - DK6QI
Not heard Radio Caroline live for about 20 years, and it was
never this clear! you have made my day big time. We only got connected to the
Internet yesterday+ this is the first time I have sent an e-mail to any radio
station. Say hello to me. Gary in Leicestershire England
I DO like the website you've done - great stuff... I like the way
you've put the section on to publicise the 'new' music that you and Tom are playing in
your shows!!! By the way, I really DID enjoy the Moody Blues/Justin Hayward documentary
broadcast back in March... It was superb... Paul Corfield, Telford, Shropshire, UK
Really liked the new site - great to see bands featured too as
opposed to just offshore stuff. Have dropped in to your shows a couple of times via the
web and hope to do so again - Steve, UK
Good to hear you back on the radio (computer). Sounds better and
louder than before. At home I am designing on the (Apple) computer nearly every evening.
And of course listening to Real Audio Caroline. Waiting for the wonderful South-music!
Thanks for the vitamins¹. Ge van Leyden, The Hague, Netherlands.
We listening YEAH BABY !!!! Nessie 1, Inverness,
Scotland.
I do like the Caroline South Shows very much. A thankful listener
& supporter. Gerhard Fiolka in Bremen (North-Germany)
I have been a Caroline listener on and off since 1970. This is
the second programme of yours that I have heard and while I am not usually a spontaneous
person I felt that I had to drop you an email. I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was
to hear what I call "intelligent radio". Your programmes are very entertaining.
I enjoyed very much the interviews with Justin Hayward, Douglas Adams and the Italian
singer Elisa. I'd be interested in knowing if I can get her albums in the UK. Thanks again
for the obvious effort that you have put into producing some entertaining programmes.
Kindest Regards, Alan Maylin, Kent, UK
Hi Mark, I'd like to say a big thank you for bringing this Story of
the Moody Blues to the Caroline listeners. Please more things like that. (What about a
Paul Rodgers interview?) Best regards, Manfred Kreuzpaintner, Landshut, Southern
Germany.
Hi, Just a quick thanks for the Justin Hayward interview
tonight. Looking forward to the second part next week. Great name, Caroline South, takes
me back just a few years. ;-) Really enjoyed last weeks shows, they're just that
little bit different, but still Caroline, (as long as you define 'Caroline' as good music)
thanks all. Regards, Mike. Lakenheath, Suffolk, England
Hello Mark, I'd like to take the opportunity to tell you on this way,
that this week's Caroline South programs had been absolutely great, both yours and Tom
Anderson's Overdrive program. Especially the interview with Justin Hayward was very
interesting and I'm already waiting for the 2nd part. Keep on doing such good programs.
Kind regards, Peter Och from Blankenstein, Germany.
Hi Radio Caroline, I'm writing to tell you how much I enjoyed
the interview with Justin Hayward. Both parts. The Moody Blues have been one of my
favourite bands for longer than I want to admit. While I listen to lots of music, old
& new, I think Rockosaurs Still Rule! Thank you for bringing us such a nice, extended
talk with a legend. Diane Bush, Nashville, Tennessee, USA
Many thanks for your great shows, I listen with interest and pleasure.
Best wishes, Dr. Martin van der Ven, Germany.
Hi Mark! Another good evening of entertainment! Thanks for
mentioning the old Empire crew. Caroline is certainly good at bringing people together...Dave
Cooper, UK
Well done nice programme. Look forward to more good stuff. Andy
Rayment, UK
Caught the show. Kin brilliant. Love it. Keep on
broadcasting. Nick - the Essex boy anorak. UK
Dear All at Europa Productions, Just a note to thank you for
sponsoring the Caroline South Broadcasts, it was good to hear Tom Anderson again after so
many years, Caroline Overdrive has been much missed. With very best wishes, Andrew
James, UK
Fabulous. This is a great idea and the signal is extremely
clear. Congratulations. Gil Muro, New York, USA
Hi! I just want to inform you that I was listening to the program
"Caroline South" yesterday evening. I liked the interview with Tom Anderson and
the music that you played was really relaxing. Keep up the good work. LA. Per Alarud,
Stockholm - Sweden
The station sounds great; Steve, Milan, Italy
A selection of entries to our 'Poignant Radio
Memories' competition - March 2001
Hi Mark and Tom, Enjoying Caroline South and Overdrive. My most
poignant moment in radio may be too obvious given my loyalty to Caroline in general but
for me it was Midnight on August 14th 1967 when Robbie Dale and Johnnie Walker, not
knowing what my befall them, defiantly and unselfishly kept working for Caroline and
uttered those emotive words, "Caroline belongs to you and we love you. Caroline
Continues!" Best Wishes Martin Denman.UK.
Quite a short one this. I was a kid listening to RNI and keen on
amateur radio. I'd located a local ham, Dave Beale, G4AXB, a doctor's son and visited him
regularly at weekends, sometimes staying overnight and listening to our favourite station,
RNI on his HRO wartime receiver. I wanted to pass my RAE and get an amateur licence which
I did in 1980 then going on to get my class A. It was soon after that I decided to visit
Dave's parents to tell them of my very good fortune and how Dave would love my callsign
but was told that he'd died of leukaemia. Friends all agreed that he really would have
loved it! 73 all (best wishes) from G4RNI, (George). UK
My most remembered radio memory was when Radio London closed down.
The Beatles ' Day in the Life ' finished and then the most haunting voice said
"Radio London is now closing down." I was not a Radio London fan but I
will always remember that moment when I was supposed to be working and I was hiding in a
stack of light bulbs listening on a tranny with my earpiece. Roland Beaney, Romsey
Hampshire, UK
Hello Mark, There are Four "Radio Broadcasts" plus One that
come to mind.
1. 1964 When I was a young School child hearing "Radio
Caroline" and "Radio England" was an exciting time (In my opinion the best
two stations). Indeed it has always made me enthusiastic about "Radio" for the
People not for Profit!
2. 1968 (I think) My Parents and me were in the car in a lay-by having
lunch when I happened to tune into "The Voice of America" on a borrowed SW
Receiver, which was broadcasting the Launch of Apollo 8. We were in awe and excitement.
3. 1970 When RNI for the General Election Changed its name to
"Radio Caroline" throughout the campaign it held my attention and indeed helped
to establish "Commercial Radio" in the U.K.
4. 1997 I was in an hotel room near Maidstone to go to the following
day to Queenborough to see the "Ross Revenge" that was broadcasting on an RSL
that August. It was electrifying to hear a Legal AM Broadcast of "Radio
Caroline". (This of course was before Satellite and Internet)
5. 2001 "Caroline South" The first show was as you said a
"Test" broadcast but again the Quality so the Signal made the show Atmospheric!
Shades of Medium Wave.
Sorry for more than one but you triggered my Radio Memories! Yours, Chris
Martin. (Earth & Fire Anorak as said by Buzby!) Bournemouth, UK
